"Where Champions are Challenged." One of Mid-Michigan's oldest and most prestigious wrestling tournaments — held annually at Williamston High School since 1963.
About The Classic
The Williamston Wrestling Classic began in 1963 — the first year Jim Mooney coached in Williamston. Long known for its high level of competition, the Classic features some of the top-ranked teams in Michigan and numerous returning state champions and placers. Classic veterans have long said: should you place at the Classic, you should place at the State tournament.
In 2001, the tournament was renamed in honor of our long-time head coach, Jim Mooney. We have little information about the early years and no information about 1963 except that Williamston's Frank Casteel was the first hometown champion at 119 pounds.
